Leading with the Fear of God: Embodying Humility, Integrity, and Compassion in National Leadership
Leadership with the Fear of God
Is Prime Minister James Marape leading Papua New Guinea with the genuine humility, integrity, and compassion reflective of a leader who truly fears God? Are our national leaders truly embodying the essence of humility, integrity, and compassion in their governance, or are they merely paying lip service to these virtues?
God is the ultimate Judge. Scripture emphasizes that ultimately, God has the authority to judge leadership. “The Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver; the Lord is our king; he will save us.” – Isaiah 33:22
Embodying the Fear of God in Leadership
As a national leader and head of the State, embodying the fear of God involves a profound commitment to humility, integrity, and servant leadership. To truly demonstrate that you fear only God, you should exhibit the following leadership traits and qualities:
1. Humility
Acknowledge that your authority and power come from God, and lead with a servant’s heart, putting the needs of the people above your own (Philippians 2:3-4).
2. Integrity
Uphold honesty, transparency, and moral uprightness in all your dealings, ensuring that your actions align with your words (Proverbs 11:3).
3. Compassion
Show empathy and compassion towards the marginalized and vulnerable in society, advocating for justice and equality for all (Micah 6:8).
4. Wisdom
Seek divine wisdom and guidance in decision-making, recognizing that true wisdom comes from God (James 1:5).
5. Accountability
Be open to feedback, correction, and accountability, fostering a culture of transparency and accountability within your leadership team (Proverbs 15:22).
Avoiding Unrighteous Leadership Practices – Bad Leadership Practices That Contradicts God’s Word
To avoid falling into the trap of bad leadership practices that contradict the fear of God, steer clear of the following behaviors:
1. Pride and Arrogance
Guard against pride and arrogance, as they lead to downfall and destruction (Proverbs 16:18).
2. Corruption and Dishonesty
Refrain from engaging in corrupt practices or deceitful behavior, as they are an abomination to God (Proverbs 11:1).
3. Oppression and Injustice
Avoid oppressing the weak and marginalized, as God stands against injustice and oppression (Isaiah 1:17).
4. Selfishness and Greed
Resist the temptation to prioritize personal gain over the welfare of the people you lead, as greed leads to ruin (1 Timothy 6:10).
5. Lack of Accountability
Do not surround yourself with yes-men or avoid accountability, as wise counsel is essential for effective leadership (Proverbs 11:14).
The leadership that reflects the fear of God, draws inspiration from the teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus emplified servant leadership, humility, and love for all.
Reflect on the words of influential Christian leaders such as Mother Teresa, who said, “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.”
Embrace a leadership style that prioritizes collaboration, compassion, and the common good, guided by the fear of God and a deep sense of responsibility towards the Nation and the people you serve.
God Bless Papua New Guinea!
Paul, M.
